AUTONOMY
A concert of new works written by women and non-binary composers in response to the overturning of the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.
Paradox Opera returns to virtual and live stages with Autonomy, a reactive opera and art gallery experience in defiance of the Supreme Court overturning of Roe v Wade. Voices from across the artistic and gender spectrum have come together to express their support for the human right of autonomy. We will present a concert of new works written by women and non-binary composers, performed by Soprano Alissa Roca (she/her) and Anja Arko (she/her). Performances will take place virtually; outside of the North Carolina Legislative Building on the Mall in Raleigh, NC; and subsequently alongside a curated art gallery of new works by artists of all genders & sexualities. These pieces are intended to be experienced together with the hope of creating a powerful multimedia experience for the audience.
Only weeks before the production of their first project as Paradox Opera, founder Alissa Roca was devastated to hear about the Supreme Court decision. She decided to craft Paradox Opera’s second performance as a timely response to this critical shift in the protections of child-bearing individuals living in the United States.
“The moment I learned that the Supreme Court had officially overturned Roe I knew I had to create something in response, in protest,” shares Roca. “Music and art is what I know, so I have asked so many incredible people to lend me their voices and stories to create Autonomy. I hope to amplify these voices and share these stories in a way that can change people's hearts and help educate on why bodily autonomy is not only important, but mandatory.”
Board Chair Cynthia Joseph-Friedman explains her connection with the organization and this work:
“My association with Paradox Opera came from a desire both to expand the image of opera as a more universal form of art, while creating a supportive and inclusive environment that has not been the norm in what have been considered classic art forms. To be able to address current events and dilemmas, as well as champion the forward movement we’ve experienced as a society is a goal. As a woman who experienced the celebration that came with the original Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973, I was shocked to see it overturned in 2022, truly a day I never saw coming. This production is a way to express that shock, both in words, music, and visual art.”
Composer and featured artist Rachel Dean:
“The urgency of this issue isn’t going away with time - the reversal of Roe v Wade is negatively affecting women right now, today, and things are poised to get still worse. Music is a way to both express our feelings about this and to expand understanding and empathy for people who might otherwise not receive it - and I think empathy drives policy change.”
